Short answer

An AI call center is a call center where AI does part of the phone work: AI voice agents answer or place calls on their own, agent assist coaches live reps during the call, and AI transcribes, scores and routes every conversation. Most real AI call centers are hybrids, with AI taking the simple, repeatable calls and people taking the rest.

Contact center software with AI built in runs about $95 to $250 per agent a month at list price, and AI voice agents bill about $0.04 to $0.31 a minute. On outbound, an AI voice calling a cell phone or home line needs the person's consent first.

Not legal advice. Prices and rules below were checked on October 24, 2026, on vendors' own pages and the primary legal sources. Talk to a lawyer before you launch AI calling.

AI in a call center at a glance What the AI does How it's priced
AI voice agents Answers or places the call alone Per minute
Agent assist Coaches the rep live, writes notes Higher seat tier or add-on
AI quality assurance Scores every call Higher seat tier or add-on
AI routing and IVR Sends callers to the right place Usually in the seat price
AI on the dialer Detects answers, drops voicemails Per seat, often quote only

What is an AI call center?

An AI call center is a phone operation, inbound or outbound, that uses AI for call work people used to do by hand: answering common questions, booking, taking notes, scoring calls and deciding who gets which call. It can be one AI receptionist on a small team's main line or AI on every call in a large contact center.

AI call center agent

An AI call center agent is a voice agent that handles a call with no person on the line. It answers from your scripts and data, books or updates records, and hands off to a human when it should. Under the hood it's a phone line, speech-to-text, an AI model and a voice, tied together by an agent layer (how an AI voice agent works).

How AI works in a call center

AI works in a call center in five jobs: taking calls itself, coaching live reps, scoring every call instead of the handful a manager can hear, routing callers by what they say, and detecting answers on the dialer. Few teams need all five on day one.

Call center agent assist

Call center agent assist is AI that works beside a human rep on a live call, suggesting replies, surfacing account details and writing the call notes, and it has the best evidence behind it. A study of 5,172 support agents found AI assistance raised issues resolved per hour by 15% on average and by 30% for less experienced agents, with small quality drops for the most skilled (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2025).

AI inbound call center

An AI inbound call center uses AI voice agents to answer incoming calls first: after-hours, overflow when every rep is busy, and the simple questions that make up a big share of volume. It's the best place to start, because the caller chose to call you.

The part to get right is the handoff. Retell AI, Vapi, Bland AI and Synthflow all document warm transfers, where the AI briefs the human before connecting the caller (Retell's transfer docs), though Bland's needs an enterprise account. For a small team, one AI receptionist on the main line is often the whole AI inbound call center.

AI outbound call center

An AI outbound call center uses AI on sales and follow-up calls, and the law splits it in two. An AI voice placing the call needs the person's prior express consent, and prior express written consent for a sales call, because the FCC treats AI voices as "artificial" voices under the TCPA (FCC 24-17). A cold list doesn't have that consent.

AI that helps a human rep dial is regulated like any other dialer, and that's where AI earns its place on a cold-calling floor. When we ran predictive and parallel dialing, a fairly small team went through about 30,000 leads a month, and the answering machine detection left a pause after people said hello that killed trust immediately. Our AI cold calling guide covers outbound rules and tools, and the sales dialer guide covers dialer types.

Best AI call center software

The best AI call center software depends on whether you need AI around human reps or AI that takes calls itself: contact center suites such as RingCX, Dialpad and Genesys sell seats with AI inside, and AI agent platforms such as Retell AI, Vapi and Bland AI sell minutes.

Call center AI software for human teams

Call center AI software for human teams puts agent assist and AI quality scoring in a higher seat tier or an add-on. RingCX Professional at $95 per agent a month, paid annually, is the cheapest tier here with AI agent assist and AI quality management included (RingCentral pricing). RingCentral also sells each AI module as an add-on from $25 per user a month.

  • Dialpad: Live Coach from Support Advanced, $119.
  • Genesys: Agent Copilot in CX 4, $240; lower plans pay AI tokens.
  • NiCE: Copilot and AI agents in Ultimate, $249 plus $0.25 a session.
  • Talkdesk: Elite $165, AI priced by sales.
  • Zendesk: Suite Professional $115 plus Copilot at $50.
  • Five9: no published prices.

Amazon Connect has no seats or minimums: voice is $0.038 a minute with AI analytics, agent assist and self-service included (Amazon Connect pricing). It suits teams with developers.

AI call center solutions that take the call

AI call center solutions that take the call bill per minute: Retell AI $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, Bland AI $0.12 to $0.14, Vapi $0.05 for hosting plus the AI and phone parts, and Google's AI agents $0.06 to $0.12. Concurrency is the hidden limit. Retell includes 20 simultaneous calls then charges $8 a line a month; Vapi includes 4, 10 or 30 by plan, then $10 a line (Retell pricing, Vapi pricing).

Our Retell AI pricing and Vapi alternatives guides break the platform bills down.

AI call center automation: what to automate first

AI call center automation pays off first on calls that are frequent, simple and low-risk: hours and directions, order or appointment status, booking and rebooking, after-hours intake and call summaries. Keep people on complaints, cancellations and anything where a wrong answer costs money.

In Moffatt v. Air Canada, a tribunal held the airline responsible for what its website chatbot told a customer, calling the idea that the bot was "a separate legal entity" a "remarkable submission" (2024 BCCRT 149). Two rules keep automation from backfiring:

  • Always offer a person. In Gartner's 2024 survey, 64% of customers said they'd prefer companies didn't use AI for customer service (Gartner), and the top worry was not reaching a human.
  • Plan for peak concurrency. When every AI line is busy, new calls wait or fail.

Are AI phone calls legal?

AI phone calls are legal in the US when they follow the same rules as any artificial-voice call: consent for calls to cell phones and home lines, written consent for sales calls, and the business identified at the start of the call (47 CFR 64.1200). Inbound calls don't need that calling consent, but recording and disclosure rules apply.

Utah requires a business to say it's using AI when a person asks (Utah Code 13-77). Maine requires clear notice when an AI chatbot, voice included, could mislead a reasonable consumer into thinking it's human (10 MRSA 1500-DD). An FCC proposal to require AI disclosure on every call is still pending. The rest of the calling rules are in our TCPA rules for sales calls.

Two party consent states and AI recording

Two party consent states, more accurately all-party consent states, require everyone on a call to agree before it's recorded, and AI that listens to or transcribes a call raises the same question. Federal law needs only one party's consent (18 U.S.C. 2511), but California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington require more, with details that vary by state.

California is where AI vendors get sued, because its privacy law allows $5,000 per violation without proof of actual damages (Penal Code 637.2). In the Google contact center AI case, a court let claims proceed in 2025 because Google could use call data for itself (order), then on October 22, 2026 found that callers who'd agreed to a privacy policy sharing calls with service providers had consented (order). So announce recording and AI on every call, and name call vendors in your privacy policy.

Will AI replace call center jobs?

AI will shrink call center jobs, not end them. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects customer service representative jobs to fall 5% from 2025 to 2035, from 2,666,000 to 2,524,100, with about 289,500 openings a year still to fill (BLS).

Gartner predicts half of the organizations that planned big cuts to customer service staff because of AI will abandon those plans by 2027 (Gartner, June 2025). The realistic outcome on a floor is fewer reps on simple calls and better-coached reps on the calls that matter.

How to build an AI call center

To build an AI call center, start with one job, usually after-hours or overflow inbound, connect the agent to your CRM and calendar, set the human handoff, then add agent assist and call scoring for your reps. The catch is the bill: every AI agent rents a phone carrier and an AI model, and a platform adds its own fee on top of those, every minute, forever.

Owning changes that layer. In the systems we build, the agent's conversation logic, scripts, CRM and calendar hookups, recordings and transcripts run on your own hosting, and the phone line and AI minutes are billed as utilities at cost, either vendor swappable.

Renting is the better call at low volume. Owning wins when seats and minutes are a big monthly line: one client's four stitched-together sales tools went from about $4,500 a month to about $300 in hosting (case study). Our guide to AI voice agents for business covers the rest of the topic. What a build costs: typically less than you spend today, paid monthly, and the build payments have an end date. Frequently asked questions

Can AI do a phone call?

Yes. An AI voice agent can answer or place a phone call, hold a conversation, book an appointment and transfer the caller to a person. Platforms such as Retell AI, Vapi and Bland AI sell this by the minute, and contact center suites such as Amazon Connect and Google's offer it too. In the US, an AI voice that calls a cell phone or home line needs the person's prior express consent.

How much does an AI call center cost?

An AI call center costs about $95 to $250 per agent a month on contact center software with AI built in, or about $0.04 to $0.31 a minute for AI voice agents that take calls on their own. A 25-agent team on a seat plan with AI pays roughly $2,400 to $6,200 a month at list price, before phone usage.

Do AI call center agents have to say they're AI?

There's no general federal rule yet. Every AI-voice call must identify the business at the start under the FCC's rules, and a 2024 FCC proposal to require an AI disclosure is still only a proposal. Utah requires disclosure when the caller asks, and Maine requires clear notice when an AI chatbot, voice included, could mislead a reasonable consumer into thinking it's human. Saying it up front is the safe habit. This isn't legal advice.

How do you get around AI customer service?

Ask for a person in plain words, such as 'agent' or 'representative', or press 0. Well-built AI call centers transfer you to a human when you ask, and Gartner's 2025 research found most service leaders plan to keep human agents. If a system won't let callers reach a person, that's a design choice worth complaining about.

Is an AI call center worth it for a small business?

For a small business, an AI call center usually means one AI receptionist answering after hours and overflow calls, not a full contact center suite. At a few hundred calls a month, renting a per-minute agent is cheaper than anything else. Owning the agent starts to pay once AI calls are a steady, large line on the bill.
